so, this post was originally going to be about tiles and pattern
s in rocks for sidewalks, but i just saw, probably the coolest thing i have ever seen in my life... toilet wise. it was a urinal of a type ive never seen before. my mom and i were walking up to castelo sao jorge, and we come up to the wall, and what do i see, but a curved piece of steel and an art nouveau sign that says urinal. i was flabbergasted. i was like, a urinal outdoors? awesome. i wanted to use it, but mom kept walking towards the castle, plus there was a policeman standing not far from it, and it just seems kind of wrong to use the facilities in the open air like that... in public. that said, i'm like so tempted to walk back up there (15-20 minutes) just to use it... it doesnt look like much,
but it's more the concept. and the ability to go to the bathroom outdoors, its like camping, but in the city.
so, to get back to the main original topic for this post, the
sidewalks in lisbon are done in white and black stones formed into patterns. some of the patterns are types of ships and mermaids, and animals, and some of the patterns are just artistic, swirls, circles, triangles, all sorts of things. different squares have different
patterns, and i just really like it. it adds a special flair, plus, because the stones are tiny, they give a little better traction than just flat stone would... since it rained this
morning, and i was wandering around in the rain, i learned that... since i almost slipped and fell (in boat shoes!) on some random pieces of straight stone.
portugal is famous for it's coloured tiles, the people use them for everything. theyre used on buildings inside and out. theyre very decorative, obviously. and alot of them are rather pretty, some are geometric patterns and some are painted to make big pictures.
these two are examples of the blue and white tiles used to represent scenes from
lisbon and the the life of st anthony and a scene oftagus.
and now for something completely different. i think the police in lisbon have cracked down on the gypsies. its awesome, you can walk around the praca do comercio without being harrassed by 15 guys offering you hasish, cocaine, and cheap sunglasses at the same time... (the sunglasses are made out of cocaine)
