i hadnt been back to fredericksburg since 05. thats a long time

oing back to visit your alma mater is kind of wierd which is one of the reasons i've avoided it. but i went back, because, i heard they were doing some changes on campus and all that. so, i went and walked around campus on a quiet, humid, overcast saturday afternoon. the campus was fairly ghosttown-esque in thats early sunday morning way it used to be.
some of the new buildings on campus that i hadnt seen before were the campanile and the new overwalk to the otherside of the jeff davis highway. the campanile is ok. i think its a bit too ostentatious and unnecessary, but it looks alright.
the overwalk is functional and alot easier than having to cross jeff davis highway.
theyre rennovating some of the buildings, like my old favourite, Monroe Hall. monroe is where mo
st of my classes were located. not only was it one of the coolest looking buildings outside, but it also had maps of states, flags, virginia presidents homes, and the state seals for lots of the states. alot of the building was being rennovated, i hope they saved the murals inside and dont overmodernize it to

down the road a bit from school is the fredericksburg battlefield on marye's heights
. the battlefield has been encroached on by development through the years. the town was wrecked by the battle but gradually expanded after the battle up to the sunken road and beyond. actually, there are a few redoubts on campus left over from the battle. the yankees crossed the rappahanock river, after managing to erect a bridge under heavy fire. and then had to fight their way through the town. after the yankees captured the town, they prepared to assault the confederates who were well entrenched on the heights above
the town, and the infantry was guarded by this sunken road and brick wall.
wave after wave of yankee infantry were cut down on a chilly december day in 1862 as they failed to take the heights. the yankee army eventually withdrew and left the confederates in possession of the city of fredericksburg. both armies went into winter quarters and waited for spring to fight at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.
