thanksgiving this year nathalie i did fondue in norfolk for thanksgiving, and then went on a good old fashioned virginia road
trip. last year we went to the outer banks. the year before that, we went to williamsburg. this year, we went to charlottesville and fredericksburg. the first place we went to was monticello, thomas jefferson's home. which was pretty neat to see. after that, we went to jefferson vineyard, and then to the uva campus.
uva was pretty nice, alot of the buildings looked similar to ones on my old alma mater's campus in fredericksburg. so, that was cool. it was pretty cold, so we didnt walk around too much. plus apparently high heels and bricks dont play well together. jefferson vineyard was pretty neat. it was the first of the two vineyards we went to. it was also a good introduction into it. since, i'd never done a wine tasting before. we didnt eat anything crazy in c-ville. we had sandwhiches at a deli and then pizza for dinner.
the next night day we drove to barboursville, va to go to the barboursville vineyard. the ruins of the barboursville mansion were a house designed by jefferson for his buddy barbour who was the governor of va at the time. the house burned down in a fire and this is what is left. the wines at the vineyard are awesome. it was also their free wine tasting day. and then we went and nathalie took me to dinner at their fancy italian restaurant. i had venison, it was great. then we proceeded along the old road i used to take to get to/from fredericksburg when i was in college.
and then we were in fredvegas. the place i spent four years.
i didnt drag nathalie all over to battlefields. we did walk the campus, and saw the remainder of the fall foliage and some of the new buildings like the clock tower next to george washington hall. t
hen we did a basic driving tour of the city. with stops at landmarks like mary washington's house (pictured in white.) kenmore plantation, caroline street, and carls ice cream. i would have crossed the river to show her falmouth, but the traffic was horrendous. seriously, traffic in the burg has gotten ridiculous since i was in college. it got gradually worse and worse, and now route 1, old jeff davis highway is just gridlock.
i dropped nathalie off at the airport in richmond, and then went to the museum of the confederacy. it wasnt quite as awesome as i pictured it. there was lots of neat stuff, but, it wasnt as informative as i would have liked. they did have some neat artefacts, they have a ton of uniforms and things. they also have part of the lineshaft from CSS VIRGINIA, as well as the propellers just hanging out outside the building.
