life at sea on a tall ship is fairly simple. it's hard work and routine. you spend four hours on watch, then generally 8 hour

s off watc

h, and two out of three days you stand one of the two dog watches, either 4 to 6 or 6 to 8. 4 to 6 is somewhat annoying because its time for a siesta. plus it seems like on the last trip we would go back on watch again at 8... at night the watches go 8-12, 12-4, and 4-8, they all have benefits... 8-12 you normally catch the sunset, or the closing bits of it, 12-4 you get to see the stars and the dark and quietness of the night... generally, you go to sleep right aft

er dinner for that watch. and then you have the 4-8 watch... thats not bad either, because you get hte sunrise. on the last trip it seemed like the sky clouded up around 2 or 3 so you didnt see many stars on that watch, but you'd get a sunrise... in the morning, after breakfast, the officers have a meeting, then they brief the crew for the day's plan, then we clean the ship. everything rotates around... the heads and showers and hallways get cleaned every day, and each day you get to clean a different bit. one day heads, one day showers, one day halls... its not so bad, because they get cleaned every day, so there never is much to clean.
on this trip, we had good winds for most of it, so we spent alot of time undersail. one night on watch, i was at the helm, and we had 35 knot winds... so we were really flying, we didnt use our topgallant or royals for most of the trip... those are the sails on the top two yards... this trip, i finally did what id wanted to do for the past two trips ive gone on, and that is climb up

to the top of the foremast. i did it undersail too. we had up all the sails and i climbed up to t

he very top of the foremast. it rocks a bit at the top, but its nothing crazy, its actually fairly peaceful and quiet up there. its a nice place to be.
i was the only person to get seasick on this trip... and i attribute that more to cleaning toilets than the 12 foot seas... well, it was probably a combination of 12 foot seas, lack of air circulation, and cleaning toilets. it happens, even Lord Nelson got seasick every time he went to sea... and i got seasick on like the fourth day out, haha. im cool like that.
