this sunday we went to Fort Macomb
and Fort Pike. they are old inter-war forts built to protect New Orleans rear entrance through Lake Pontchartrain. they were buil
t in the 1820s-1830s by french engineers along vaubaunesque lines. (some bits have star shapes, but they have rounded seaward facing batteries.) Fort Macomb sits on Menteur Pass, a small pass between Lake Borgne and Lake Pontchartrain. it is abandoned and owned by the state, but not a state park. we saw it on the way to Fort Pike and went down this heavily rutted dirt
road to get there. once we got there, we noticed, there was no clear way to get to the fort since it was completely surrounded by
water and we didnt have a boat and none of us felt like wading through the probably deep mud. so we proceeded to Fort Pike. Which was built at the same time and is almost the exact same design only slightly larger. this fort guards the entrance to Lake Pontchartrain called the Rigolets. the casemates have a "museum" that is open boxes with old shells. naturally, i had to pick one up. it was a cool place
to go see. hopefully next weekend i will get to go to Fort Jackson 65 miles sout of new orleans guarding new orleans main entrance from the mississippi
