XO asked for volunteers to go to fleet week. i volunteered to go as soon as he sent out the email. our ship was doing maintenance so, we rode LHD 7 up there. that was an experience. quite different living standards from our ship, and it made you
appreciate how much crew comfort has advanced in only 9 years. all the state rooms and berthings on our ship have attached heads. that means no rolling out of your rack at 2 am, putting on flip flops, shoes, or something or anything and walking to the head which is down the passageway. the first day underway captain took us up to the pilot house, and down to MMR 2 to show us a steam plant. that was neat. the night before we pulled into new york, the uso girls got flown on board and did a little performance. this was nice because their stateroom was down the p-way from ours and they got the air turned on... before that it was excruciating. they asked our captain, and i g
uess he made some calls to like the XO on the ship, and it was taken care of by the time i got back to my state room to go to sleep. the next morning we manned the rails to go into
as soon as we got off the ship we went down to the world trade center tribute center to speak with the man who runs it, and see the exhibit. most of the sailors that went to fleet week from new york had not been at commissioning, so its a good way to keep up the ties between the city and the ship, as well as the emotional bond founded in the events and the steel in the ship.
after we went through th
e exhibit we walked across the street to their offices and had some awesome pizza (its new york of course) and then we went back and spoke to small children from philadelphia. which was pretty fun. after that, almost the rest of our time in new york i had to myself. thursday i had to go to a luncheon at the metropolitan club and then was supposed to go play with elementary school kids but the timing got messed up with when i was supposed to be where so i didnt manage to go to that, and then on monday i marched in a parade at the corner of dyckman and seaman streets. and then, tuesday i had to go to a yankees game. apart from that i got to visit old friends, eat brasilian food at my favourite brasilian restaurant in little brasil, Ipanema, went to see a show on broadway starring kelsey grammar which was cool.
i like new york, i wouldnt want to live there, its too big, but its not a bad place to visit.
