got off the ship today and went to Fort Monroe

been a fortification on this site since the earliest days of english settlement in the commonwealth. the modern star fort was started after the war of 1812. and was actually designed by one of napoleon's generals who had been instrumen
tal in the victory at austerlitz.
the arches in the casemate were designed with double arches (one going up, one going down)
so that they could better support the weight of the fort on the sandy ground it was constructed on. one of the peculiar things about the ramparts is that at some point, they became a pet cemetery. so, above the casemate in the dirt on the ramparts there are tomb markers for pets.
after i went around part of the fort, its pretty big, so i didn't walk around all the ramparts. i walked down by the water. and looked at the naval base across the way. and at the chamberlain... an ageist apartm
ent complex for 55 and older... which looks pretty awesome. on the way back to the car, i enjoyed some of the cherry blossoms in front
of the buildings. the base is full of very pretty red brick buildings... it is a very nice place to walk around. wish the navy had this sort of thing...
