e... i felt as if i was home again. the 4 months i spent in newport in 2008 had a slightly major influence on me... nothing like a drill instructor screaming at you making you do pushups in the sand to leave an impression... so, the first thing i did when i got in, apart from checking into my room, was heading down to the OCS side of the base to see what had changed...well, the buildings look the same, but the candidates are in NWUs... they still salute cars, and the new pool is complete. they're also building an obstacle course... and the old carrier forrestal is missing... towed down to philadelphia to be prepped for sinking... after i drove around the ocs side i went over to the naval war college museum to check that out and see how it was... i was expecting more about the war college and its impact on world war II... and alfred thayer mahan... both of which seemed mere footnotes... a lot of history about torpedo research at the base, which is important, but there was ALOOT, maybe 30% of the musuem was about torpedo research and the history of torpedos. its still worth a trip though... its free, which is my favourite museum price.
today, monday, was the first day of class... so, we went over to the swos building a
nd went through the in-briefs... when that was over, i headed over to the nex, and was distracted by the sailboats sailing over by the remaining carrier... around dinner time, we headed into
the old town to eat dinner and wander around a bit... we walked by the piers and looked at the tourists eating, ate some bbq, and some ice cream... and then walked around some more... stopped by the oliver hazzard perry statue, because he was a newport native and a great officer... there was a newport gulls game on. we didnt go, but maybe we'll go to another one, theyre cheap, and its a really pretty stadium. tommorow, we have our first exam... and then next monday, we have our rules of the road exam... seems like we will get a lot of ship simu
lator time which is good. i lo
