Fleet Week 2011... second fleet week, and third
trip to new york with the navy... one of the great navy events of the
year. this year, we moored at staten island, and i spent a lot of time stressed out as Command Duty Officer under instruction learning to run the ship when the captain was gone. since this was my third trip to new york in three years, i went to several old places, and several new places. some of the newer highlights of manhattan t
his time were Keen's steakhouse, amazing steak, awesome building, and good service. we saw it
on the bourdain show and just went crazy there.
one of the cooler places i went was to the US delegation to the UN. I wanted to visit the actual UN building was closed because of memorial day, but a nice diplomat at our delegation gave me a quick tour of the building. which was pretty cool, and very nice of her.
i finally managed to walk around the stock market at wall street. anothe
r cool stop was the lego store where they ha
d several cool lego models and other works of lego art.
some of the other cool places were a dinner at the new york athletic club... this time, we got a tour of the bui
lding, and that included a stop on the rooftop beer garden, whic
h overlooks central park. i also went to two new art galleries... the guggenheim, which i did not realize was built by frank lloyd wright. i also went to the neues gallerie which is a modern germanic art museum... they had an exhibit on the 1900 Viennese scene. including several famous works of art by gustav klimt which was cool. and an entire room of sketches of girls doing inappropriate things to themselves. so, that was interesting...
those were some of the highlight,s i also ate at heidelberger which was also on the
bourdain show, and that was great german food. i hadn't had good german food in a long time. and then, my regular new york restaurant: ipanema... good brasilian food. i'll leave you with a picture of the new york library.
manhattan is an awesome place to go. especially in uniform, you get treated very well, so many museums are free. manhattan is full of people, crowded, and is a place i wouldn't want to live... but, i do enjoy visiting it. 3 amazing times in new york with the navy.
