So,
today, we went to the national museum of the marine corps. i took my dutch midshipmen there en route to dc. it is an immense museum. that covers the history of the corps with multi-media and artifacts. i wish there would have been more on the early days... but, they did a good job showing the marines work afloat and ashore... but, i wish they would have spent more time on the marines in the mexican war.
their coverage of the war between the states was pretty interesting, and they talked about both the
US and Confederate marine corps... where the museum excelled, obviously, was their dealing with the 1st and 2nd World wars.
one of the cool things to see was the biplane that my great uncle homer worked on during the interwar years when the marines were in nicaragua chasing the sandinistas. some of the other neat life size dioramas were a demonstration of heliborne assaults in korea and an amtrac hitting the beach at tarawa. its a pretty immense museum, so be sure to eat before you go. i spent 3 hours there and could have spent another hour... easily.
