so, we w
ent to wilmington, nc and stopped for lunch on the way down in new bern, nc. new bern was pretty cool, it sits on a peninsula and is a super historical old town. they also have a thing with bears... all over the city there are bears... nathalie posed with several of them, here she is with EMC bear. she also posed with colonial bear, pirate bear, and chain saw carved bear. new bern looks like a good p
lace to come back to for a weekend trip.
after lunch we continued on to wilmington. i didn't make nathalie go to fort fisher or the battleship north carolina or any of thos
e things. we did go to one of the historic houses built by a doctor and cutting edge for its day.
one of the coolest stores ever known was the column store... 1.800.columns for all your column neeeds.
we walked around wilmington and enjoyed looking at historic houses, and going to the cape fear museum. which h
ad exhibits on
michael jordan, pirates, and a huge model of wil
mington during the war. it was a major blockade running center, so lots of wealth flowed into the city during the war against the yankees. one of the other places we wandered through was the cotton exc
hange, now a touristy stop full of shops and things... we ate sushi one night at a really good place... learned a lesson... don't eat sushi named pain. its not a good plan.
on the way back up to norfolk, i made a stop along the way t
o see the replica of the CSS ALBEMARLE, a confederate ironclad that saw action in the roanoke river, sinking two yankee blockading ships before being sank in a raid... the yankees refloated the albmarle and sent her to the james river squadron to blockade richmond... this replica was not full size... and that was kind of disappointing, but it was cool to see in the river...
