After we took the dutch midshipmen to the marine museum, we
continued our drive up to dc. the main things we saw were the various monuments, walked by the white house, took a of the capitol building, went to arlington national cemetery, and went to the spy museum. I didnt really like the spy museum... i thought it was fairly puerile, and didn't really have all that much historicalness. it was much more of a gimmicky museum.
a good lessons learned for the capitol building is to be sure to ask for the tours of the senate and house galleries as well as t
he capitol. the capi
tol tour takes you to the old house, and the rotunda, and the crypt... and that's it. i was a bit disappointed that was all, but we made a spontaneous decision after that to go to the library of congress... which was pretty awesome. beautiful exhibits on thomas jefferson's library and a small exhibit of civil war portraits which was pretty interesting. the library's archit
ecture was kind of neo-romanesque... it was pretty nifty.
arlington national cemetery would have been great. we got there with enough time to watch the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier... but, then, we got
caught in a torrential downpour... so we sheltered for a bit, and then decided to make a run for it in the rain and got completely soaked.
as we walked around dc, we looked for bits and pieces of memorabilia that reflected our allies, particularly our dutch allies, and we found a shining example at the korean war me
morial.
where all of the united nations that fought against north korean aggression were memorialized.
then, on the walk back from the monuments to the hotel we saw this happy dude on the roof of the white house. i wonder what his watch rotation is like... especially in the summer ti
